I know John is the most perfect and pure being on the show but he should have gone into rage mode the second they stomped in the door.įrom there, the characters retreated to their usual debate circles and hashed out what they should do next, but so much momentum from the previous episode had been lost that the rest of the episode felt frustrating. The mutant underground should have been downright furious at the Cuckoos, not only for using them but for getting Dreamer killed (Esme’s first failed plan got her captured and subsequently shot by Campbell). Esme played them all, hard, and while the Struckers, Blink, and company all voiced this, there didn’t seem to be enough heat to that scene.
But for as big of an impression the Cuckoos made with their in-sync, high-heel, runway-walk entrance, it’s just not believable that the mutant underground would even give them the chance to speak. We’re not sure what the Cuckoos ultimately want, and by extension the Hellfire Club, but right now we know they’re concerned about the growing power of the Hound Program and need the help of the mutant underground to take them down. Not to mention they are the first true mutant villains we’ve seen on the show, mutants who have no qualms about killing humans in order to get their way. The Cuckoos were the clear standout of the episode with the unnerving way they talk in unison and finish each other’s sentences. Unfortunately, this winds up amounting to little more than covering familiar ground. The real reason for this jump in logic is so the writers could put everyone back together and mine drama from all of the recent twists and turns. The Hellfire Club clearly wants the Strucker children and the heavy-hitters of the mutant underground, so why wouldn’t they use their powers (or just pick up a gun off one of the many dead Sentinel Services officers) and force them to come along with them to Hellfire HQ? Yes, the Cuckoos do explain that things got a bit crazy with all the alarms going off and they decided to flee, but for a calculating character like Esme, surely she could have accounted for that.
The confusion started at the outset when we see the three reunited Cuckoos explaining where all of the major characters are now, but what doesn’t track is how they let it wind up like that.
